City of Cross Plains Maintenance Worker Job
Description Job Title:
Maintenance Worker Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the
Public Works Director, the Maintenance Worker performs a variety
of skilled and semi-skilled tasks related to the maintenance,
repair, and operation of city infrastructure and services,
including water, wastewater, natural gas, streets, parks, and
other public facilities. This position requires a strong work
ethic, the ability to work in outdoor conditions, and adherence
to safety regulations and city policies. Essential Duties and
Responsibilities: This position is responsible for
assisting in the maintenance, repair, and operation of the
city’s water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
Duties include reading, installing, and maintaining water meters
and service lines, performing leak detection and repairs, and
conducting routine checks on lift stations, pumps, and treatment
facilities. The employee must ensure compliance with TCEQ (Texas
Commission on Environmental Quality) regulations and city
policies. In addition, the maintenance worker
assists in the upkeep and operation of the city’s natural gas
distribution system, including performing leak detection,
repairs, and meter maintenance while ensuring compliance with
Railroad Commission of Texas regulations and safety standards.
The position also requires street maintenance work such as
pothole patching, grading, resurfacing, sidewalk and curb
repairs, and maintaining street signs. Operation of heavy
equipment, including backhoes, dump trucks, and graders, may be
required, along with snow and ice removal when necessary. Responsibilities extend to the
maintenance of parks, rights-of-way, and public properties,
including mowing, trimming, tree trimming, brush removal, and
the repair of playground equipment and park facilities. The
maintenance worker prepares athletic fields and public spaces
for events as needed. General duties also include assisting with
facility maintenance, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry
repairs, responding to service requests and emergencies,
maintaining city equipment and vehicles, and completing training
and certifications required by city and state regulations. Other
duties may be assigned by the Public Works Director or City
Administrator. Qualifications: Applicants must have a high school
diploma or GED, a valid Texas driver’s license (CDL
preferred), and the ability to obtain and maintain
necessary certifications for wastewater and natural gas
operations. A Class D Water Operator License
issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)
is required for this position, or the applicant must be able to
obtain the license within two months of hire. Basic knowledge of
equipment operation and maintenance, along with the ability to
work in various weather conditions and perform physically
demanding tasks, is required. Preferred qualifications include
experience in municipal public works, construction, plumbing, or
related fields, as well as knowledge of state and federal
regulations for water, wastewater, and gas systems. The ability
to read blueprints, maps, and technical manuals is beneficial. Work Conditions & Physical Requirements: Work is performed outdoors in all
weather conditions and requires frequent standing, walking,
bending, kneeling, and climbing. The employee must be able to
lift up to 50 pounds regularly and heavier objects occasionally.
Night, weekend, and holiday work may be required in emergency
situations. Compensation & Benefits: The position offers an hourly wage based
on experience and qualifications, with city-provided benefits
including health insurance, retirement contributions, and paid
